Whale watching is a magical experience, and capturing those moments on camera can make the memories last a lifetime. Although we share professional photos with our clients, we know many of you love to snap your own shots. Here are some tips to help you take the best photos of cetaceans during your tour with us.

1. Bring the Right Equipment

While smartphones can capture great photos, having a camera with a good zoom lens can make a big difference. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens (200mm or more) is ideal for getting those close-up shots of whales.

2. Use a Fast Shutter Speed

Whales move quickly and unpredictably, so a fast shutter speed is essential to avoid blurry images. Set your camera to a shutter speed of at least 1/1000 of a second to freeze the action.

3. Shoot in Burst Mode

Using burst mode increases your chances of capturing the perfect moment. When you see a pilot whale or dolphin, hold down the shutter button to take a series of photos in rapid succession.

4. Focus on Composition

Think about your composition to create stunning images. Use the rule of thirds to place the whale off-center and include some of the surrounding ocean and sky to give context and scale to your photos.

5. Be Patient and Ready

Whale watching requires patience. Keep your camera ready at all times and be prepared to wait for the perfect shot. Listen to your guide for tips on where and when to expect whale activity.

6. Adjust for Lighting

Lighting conditions can change quickly on the water. Early morning offer the best natural light for photography. If it’s sunny, use a polarizing filter to reduce glare from the water.

7. Capture the Environment

Whale watching is not just about the cetaceans. Capture the beautiful seascapes, the boat, and Teide Vulcany to tell a complete story of your adventure.

8. Practice Responsible Photography

Remember, the well-being of the cetaceans is our top priority. Avoid using flash photography, as it can disturb them. Respect the guidelines provided by our crew to ensure that your photography doesn’t impact their natural behavior.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to taking amazing photos of whales during your tour. We can’t wait to see the incredible moments you capture! Feel free to share your best shots with us on social media using the hashtag #WhaleWatchTenerife.
